Choline is a water-soluble, essential nutrient that is often mentioned in connection with the B vitamins, although technically it does not belong to this vitamin group. What is choline and why is it so important?
Choline: an often underestimated micronutrient
For a long time, choline was considered only semi-essential – meaning a nutrient that the body can generally produce itself, but whose requirements should be covered through diet during certain life stages (e.g. growth or pregnancy). Today we know: the daily requirement is around 400 mg – a value that up to 90% of the population in Western countries does not reach. One possible reason for this is genetic variants in the PEMT gene, through which choline is primarily synthesised – these can reduce the body's own production. Requirements are especially higher during pregnancy and breastfeeding, at around 500 mg per day.
Choline sources in the diet
Choline is found mainly in animal-based foods. Particularly high amounts are supplied by liver (around 400 mg per 100 g) and egg yolk (about 150 mg per piece). Lecithin from soy or sunflower is also a suitable plant-based choline source – especially for people following a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Choline as a component of important structures
In both food and the body, choline is usually not present in free form, but bound as a so-called phospholipid – also known as lecithin. In this form, choline is linked to fatty acids. It is an important component of cell and mitochondrial membranes as well as lipoproteins, which are formed in the liver and are involved in fat metabolism. In addition, choline is used to form the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays a role in signal transmission between nerves and muscles as well as in memory functions, among other things. Choline is also involved in the formation of S-adenosylmethionine – an important methyl group donor.
