Pomegranate: the fruit of antiquity
The pomegranate has a history spanning thousands of years and is considered one of the oldest cultivated plants of all. It was already valued in the early Bronze Age and revered as a symbol of life, happiness and fertility. It was mentioned not only in religious texts such as the Bible and the Quran, but also celebrated in many cultures as a sign of abundance. Its bright red color and unique ingredients still make it a symbol of vitality and health today.
What makes pomegranate extract so interesting?
Pomegranates provide not only micronutrients such as potassium and folate, but also a wide range of health-promoting secondary plant compounds. The polyphenols are particularly noteworthy – especially tannins such as ellagitannins, which also include punicalagin. In addition, they contain flavonoids, especially flavanols, which are structurally related to the catechins and epicatechins found in green tea. The profile is rounded out by anthocyanins and various phenolic acids such as ellagic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and p-coumaric acid.

The science behind the effect
Research focuses particularly on the ellagitannins , which occur in high concentrations in pomegranate. One frequently mentioned representative is punicalagin – a compound that is naturally converted into ellagic acid in the body.
In the gut, in turn, this ellagic acid is largely further metabolized into so-called urolithins by certain gut bacteria. This interaction between punicalagin, ellagic acid and urolithins forms the central polyphenol group of the pomegranate – and this exact combination is the focus of scientific interest regarding potential health-promoting effects.
Punicalagin has brought the pomegranate a great deal of attention – especially due to its exceptionally strong antioxidant capacity, which is around three times higher than that of green tea or red wine. Nevertheless, research findings suggest that punicalagin is not directly responsible for the effects observed in the human organism. Rather, it is mainly the metabolic products that are detected in the blood – namely ellagic acid and urolithins – which also have antioxidant effects and are comparable in their effect to extracts from green tea or red wine.
