Pomegranate: The fruit of antiquity

The pomegranate has a history spanning thousands of years and is considered one of the oldest cultivated plants ever.Already in the early Bronze Age, it was valued and revered as a symbol of life, luck, and fertility. It was mentioned not only in religious texts such as the Bible and the Quran but also celebrated in many cultures as a sign of abundance. Its bright red color and unique ingredients make it a symbol of vitality and health to this day.

What makes pomegranate extract so interesting?

Pomegranates provide not only micronutrients like potassium and folate but also a wide range of health-promoting secondary plant compounds. Particularly noteworthy are the polyphenols, especially tannins such as ellagitannins, which include punicalagin. Additionally, flavonoids are present, particularly flavanols, which are structurally related to catechins and epicatechins found in green tea.The profile is complemented by anthocyanins as well as various phenolic acids such as ellagic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and p-coumaric acid.

The Science Behind the Effect

Research particularly focuses on the ellagitannins that occur in high concentrations in pomegranate. A frequently mentioned representative is punicalagin – a compound that is naturally converted into ellagic acid in the body.

In the gut, this ellagic acid is further metabolized by certain gut bacteria into so-called urolithins. The interplay of punicalagin, ellagic acid, and urolithins forms the central polyphenol group of the pomegranate – and it is precisely this combination that attracts scientific interest regarding potential health-promoting effects.

Punicalagin has brought significant attention to the pomegranate – particularly due to its exceptionally strong antioxidant capacity, which is about three times higher than that of green tea or red wine. However, research suggests that punicalagin is not directly responsible for the effects observed in the human body. Instead, it is primarily the metabolites – ellagic acid and urolithins – that are detected in the blood, which also exhibit antioxidant properties and are comparable in their effects to extracts from green tea or red wine.

"In preclinical models and studies on human immune cells, researchers at Goethe University Frankfurt discovered that Urolithin A, a metabolite derived from pomegranate, sustainably improves the function of immune cells."

Another remarkable component of the pomegranate is the anthocyanins – water-soluble plant pigments from the flavonoid group, which belong to the polyphenol family and significantly contribute to the fruit's intense coloration. This class of substances has long been the focus of scientific research due to its various attributed positive properties. These include particularly antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative effects.

What distinguishes the edubily® pomegranate extract

The edubily® pomegranate extract relies on an innovative combination: In addition to high-quality pomegranate extract, it contains specifically selected probiotic bacterial strains – including B. longum, B. adolescentis, B. bifidum, and Lactobacillus plantarum. The background: For the ellagic acid contained in pomegranates to be converted into the valuable urolithin A in the gut, these exact microorganisms are required. Since many people do not have an optimally composed gut flora, the conversion is often not efficiently carried out. With the targeted supplementation of these bacteria, edubily® provides a solution to best support this natural process in the body.
