What is green tea extract?
Green tea has a long tradition dating back to ancient China and Japan – the first written mentions go back to the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD).
Green tea extract is obtained from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and is rich in valuable polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and flavanols. Unlike black tea, green tea does not undergo an oxidation process, so the active compounds remain preserved in their natural form.
The polyphenols found in green tea are water-soluble and can therefore be absorbed well. These include epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epicatechins, and flavanols, whose potential effects are being intensively studied in the lab – especially in vivo.
The effect of EGCG – the key polyphenol in green tea
The bioactive polyphenol EGCG has attracted particular interest in research, especially regarding its antioxidant properties.
Studies also suggest that EGCG may influence blood sugar and insulin levels. Links with neurological processes, skin function, and fat metabolism – for example in relation to cholesterol levels – are also currently being researched. Individual studies have also investigated possible mechanisms of action in the context of cell protection and other biological processes.
