What is Green Tea Extract?

Green tea has a long tradition dating back to ancient China and Japan – with the first written mentions from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD).

Green tea extract is derived from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and is rich in valuable polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and flavanols.Unlike black tea, green tea does not undergo an oxidation process, which preserves the active ingredients in their natural form.

The polyphenols contained in green tea are water-soluble and can therefore be well absorbed. These include, among others, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epicatechins, and flavanols, whose potential effects are being intensively studied in the laboratory, especially in vivo.

The effect of EGCG – the central polyphenol in green tea

Particular interest in research has been sparked by the bioactive polyphenol EGCG, especially regarding its antioxidant properties.

Furthermore, studies suggest that EGCG may have an influence on blood sugar and insulin levels. Connections with neurological processes, skin functions, and fat metabolism – particularly concerning cholesterol levels – are also currently being explored.Individual studies have also investigated possible mechanisms of action in the context of cell protection and other biological processes.

In 2004, a specific receptor was described through which EGCG may exert its effects in the body. (See University of Saarland
