Algal oil provides an additional source of DHA and EPA, especially in a fish-free diet, which according to studies can affect DHA and EPA levels in a similar way to conventional fish oil.
The microalga Schizochytrium sp. can store up to 50 percent of its dry weight as lipids, with DHA generally accounting for 40 percent or more of these. However, the exact physiological role of DHA in the cells of Schizochytrium sp. has not yet been conclusively clarified. What is known, though, is that DHA, in the form of membrane phospholipids, plays an important role in membrane functions. Only about 5 percent of the lipids in Schizochytrium sp. occur as phospholipids, while 90 percent or more are typically found as triglycerides in storage lipids. This means that DHA and EPA in algal oil – as in fish oil – are present in their natural triglyceride form.
