Why only one is included
When rope climbing, you clamp the rope between your feet and guide it upward along the same leg. That means you almost always get burns on just that one leg, and most athletes wear the guard only there. If you climb on both sides, order two.
The real reason it is worth it
Fifty other people at the gym have already touched a rope before you. An open scrape on your shin is therefore not only unpleasant but also an entry point for germs. The guard prevents exactly that, instead of treating it afterwards.
