To get the most out of an ice bath, a bathing time of 3 to 10 minutes is recommended. Start with a short bathing time and gradually increase it as your body gets used to it. The water temperature should be between 0 and 14 degrees Celsius. In winter, this can be achieved by placing the ice bath outdoors. In summer temperatures, homemade or shop-bought ice cubes can be used.
During the bath, it helps to practise calm, deep belly breathing to manage the initial cold shock and relax the body.
After especially intense training sessions, such as a demanding competition, an immediate ice bath can help reduce inflammation and improve your performance over the following hours and days. However, after regular strength training it is generally recommended to wait at least 6 hours before taking an ice bath, so as not to interfere with muscle growth. The reason is that inflammation after training is an important and natural part of muscle growth.
Cleaning and care of the ice bath
After use, the ice bath tub should be rinsed with fresh water and air-dried. If you use the same water for a longer period, ask a specialist shop about suitable water care products for home baths (also often available at hardware stores).
